Welcome to “Stuff You Should Know About” – a monthly collection of travel news, tips, photos, and other odds and ends that don’t really fit in anywhere else but that I still really want to share with you.

Random travel news

No more laptops on certain flights

Earlier this month, the US and the UK enacted a ban on laptops, iPads, cameras, and other electronic devices in carry-on bags on inbound flights. The ban only affects flights on certain airlines from airports in several Muslim-majority countries (including flights coming direct from cities like Istanbul and Dubai). You can read full details here.

Cool travel thing of the month

I get a lot of emails every week — sometimes every day — about new travel apps, websites, courses, products, and more. I don’t write about these things often (only the ones I really, really love), but some of them are still worth mentioning!

This month, check out:

Affiliate Marketing for Beginners

You might know that back in 2015 I launched a course with Travel Blog Success all about how to work with travel brands and tourism boards. I had so much fun creating and running that course (and still love it!) that I decided to team up with TBS once again for a brand new course.

The course is Affiliate Marketing for Beginners, and it just launched this month! The course focuses on building a successful affiliate strategy from scratch, and is geared specifically to travel bloggers.

Affiliate marketing is one of the more natural ways to monetize a blog, and this course aims to show you how to get started.

So if you know nothing about affiliate marketing or are making very little money from your current affiliate efforts, then this course is for you!

Read more about the course here.

(And, the course is currently discounted during Travel Blog Success' Spring Sale! You can also save on TBS membership, as well as courses on partnerships, Facebook marketing, freelance writing, and more!)

You should pack this

Each month, I’ll feature one or two of my packing must-haves. This section usually contains affiliate links, meaning that if you purchase through my link(s), I may earn a small commission (at no extra cost to you!).

This month, I’m recommending:

Comfy, breathable undies

I know undergarments aren't usually travel blog fodder, but I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend my favorite brand of travel-friendly underwear to you guys. They're made by Ex Officio and are super comfy and breathable. The best part, though? They're quick-drying, meaning you can hand wash them in a pinch and they'll dry while you sleep!

I get the women's Give-N-Go Bikini Briefs for myself, and they make a men's version, too!

What I’m planning right now

Because my blog runs a little bit behind of what I’m currently doing, I figured I would use this monthly update to let you know what I’m up to, and what adventures are coming up next! (You can also find more detailed info in my monthly newsletter.)

Along with going to Milwaukee for WITS in April and Indianapolis for Bloghouse in June, here's what else I've got cooking this year:

  • April: Chicago – Next weekend, Elliot and I are going to escape Ohio for a long weekend and go to Chicago! Elliot has never been before, so I want to show him all the good stuff: the improv comedy, the deep-dish pizza, The Bean, Willis Tower, and more! We'll be taking Greyhound from Cleveland, and I'll admit that I'm excited to try a different style of travel here in the US!
  • June: Oregon – Elliot and I are planning to go out to Oregon for a week sometime this summer (we're thinking early June?) to visit his sister, who lives in Bend. We’ll also road trip to some of the state’s other famous spots like Portland, Crater Lake, and the Painted Hills.
  • July: Scandinavia – July is shaping up to be my “long” stretch of travel for this year. I'm heading back to Norway to visit some spots I missed on my last two trips (like Bergen and the Lofoten Islands), will be hopping over to the Faroe Islands for a week, and am thinking I should probably finally visit Copenhagen while I'm over that way, too!
  • August: Road trip! – My sister and I are planning another road trip this summer in order to coincide with the solar eclipse on August 21. We’ve booked a hotel in Idaho for the eclipse, but otherwise have nothing planned yet. I’m looking forward to exploring South Dakota and Wyoming on the way, though, and finally visiting Yellowstone!

Are you on Snapchat? If so, make sure to follow me (dangerousbiz) to follow along on my travels in real-time!

That’s it for this month’s edition of “Stuff You Should Know About!” Which section was your favorite this month?

  1. I love the Top Instagram shots from the last month section! Those places are so beautiful and just adds to the list of places I want to travel to. There’s so much to experience and explore!

The world certainly is a big place!

Faroe Islands! I’d love to visit there. I can’t wait to read your recap and see the pictures.

I’ve always wanted to go, too – I’ll definitely be taking lots of photos!

I really can’t wait to read more about your Scandinavia trip! Especially the Faroe Islands sound really good to me! I have been neglecting Norway as well, so I can’t wait to hear more about it 🙂

I’ve written a lot about Norway already, but can’t wait to explore even more of the country!

I absolutely loved Bergen, especially that I was particularly lucky with weather when I visited it. I hope you also have a chance to see it rain-free! The views from above the hills are just breath-taking!

    I love your insta-photos 🙂 Beautiful!

    Happy travels 🙂

Crossing my fingers for good weather in Norway for sure!

I look forward to your Scandinavian posts – Copenhagen has always intrigued me! Have fun in Chicago – if you haven’t been to Chicago’s Chinatown, check out my recent post – great spot for dim-sum – cheap, delicious food and you can take the water taxi if it’s nice out! Enjoy 🙂

Thanks for the Chinatown tip! That’s one part of Chicago that I actually haven’t been to yet!

Cannot wait to hear about Crater Lake and Lofoten! Those are both high, high up on my travel list.

Also, I’m excited to see you at WITS, yay! Signed up for the conference and Blogger 101 Day.

So many exciting trips coming up – and yay for WITS! I’ll see you there!
