Welcome to “Stuff You Should Know About” – a monthly collection of travel news, tips, photos, and other odds and ends that don’t really fit in anywhere else but that I still really want to share with you.
Random travel news
No more climbing Uluru
There's always been some controversy surrounding Australia's famous red rock; indigenous Anangu people have always ascribed deep cultural significance to Uluru and have never really supported people climbing it. Beginning in October 2019, , and there will be steep fines for any who do so.
King Tut goes back on tour
Since I just saw King Tut's mummy and artifacts from his tomb in Egypt earlier this month, this news item is very timely! Artifacts from King Tut's tomb will be again starting in March 2018. They'll start out at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, and the move on to Europe in January 2019 for a 10-city international tour. This may be the last time these artifacts travel the world, as they'll be taking up residence in the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo when they return to Egypt.
Cool travel thing of the month
I get a lot of emails every week – sometimes every day – about new travel apps, websites, courses, products, and more. I don’t write about these things often (only the ones I really, really love), but some of them are still worth mentioning!
This month, check out:
Last year, I got to be part of a really cool workshop/mini-conference for travel bloggers called Bloghouse. Bloghouse is a nearly all-inclusive 3-day opportunity to live, work, and learn in a small group environment with both experienced and newer travel bloggers. There are workshops, panels, networking, and helpful one-on-one mentoring and advice. It is THE blogging conference for travel bloggers wanting to take their blogging business to the next level.
is taking place in Memphis, Tennessee, from May 31-June 3, and applications are now open!
I'll be mentoring again at Bloghouse Memphis, and can't wait. Unlike larger blogging conferences where it's easy to slip through the cracks, Bloghouse is designed to be intimate and inclusive – and all the mentors are open books when it comes to blogging strategy and making money.
Deadline to apply is February 1, 2018.
Top Instagram shots from the last month
Who doesn’t love pretty travel photos, right?? Even though Instagram has been extra frustrating lately (WHY won't you show my photos to people, IG?), it's still a platform I use regular to share some of my favorite shots.
Here are some of my most-liked photos from the last month or so:

You should pack this
Each month, I’ll feature one or two of my packing must-haves, ranging from luggage organization to items I like to pack for specific trips.
This month, I’m recommending:
When planning my recent trips to the Seychelles and Egypt, I knew packing a good sun hat was going to be important. But how many times have you gone shopping for hats only to find that either 1. all the “packable” ones are butt-ugly, or 2. the cute ones get all bent out of shape if you put them in your suitcase?
After some searching and review-reading, I finally settled on that's both cute AND packable. The brim isn't too big or floppy, but still keeps the sun out. And even after squishing this up for multiple days in my suitcase, it still came out keeping its shape! (AND it comes in a ton of different colors – I bought a white one.)
So if you're looking for a cute, truly packable sun hat for your upcoming travels, !
What I’m planning right now
Because my blog runs a little bit behind of what I’m currently doing, I figured I would use this monthly update to let you know what I’m up to, and what adventures are coming up next! (You can also find more detailed info in .)
I'm only now starting to plan my travels for 2018, but I already have quite a few trips in the works!
- March: New Zealand – Elliot and I are taking our “official” honeymoon to New Zealand in March! I'll be taking him to all my favorite places, as well as visiting some new ones! We're planning to hike the Tongariro Crossing, go tandem bungee jumping in Queenstown, and of course visit Hobbiton – all while traversing in a campervan, which will be a first for me!
- June: Ireland/Scotland – I'll be headed back to Ireland and the UK with my mom and sister in the summer. So far we're planning on a road trip in Ireland, and taking an “Outlander” tour in Scotland.
- September: Greenland – I've mentioned it before, but I'm “leading” a tour to East Greenland in September! We'll go iceberg-spotting, whale watching, and maybe even see the Northern Lights. There are still spots open, so !
I'm also starting to think about the “splurge” trip I'll take next fall. This year, my splurge trip was to Egypt. Next year, I'm torn between East Africa (specifically Kenya so I can stay at Giraffe Manor), or going to see polar bears in Canada. Which would YOU choose??
PS – You can follow along on my travels in real time on Facebook and Instagram Stories (I'm @dangerousbiz everywhere.)
